Start with the SWOT analysis of the existing email clients on the market.
Then consider the methodology and implementation of your solutions. Research the technologies you need and methods of how they can be applied to make you proposals a reality - make sure your solutions are feasible.
Identify the first design questions you'd need to solve to implement this - and think about what kind of prototypes could help you answer these questions. Bring at least on of those prototypes to life in any form or shape: a storyboard, a set of sketches, a wireframe/mockup, etc. Make sure the scope of your prototype adequately addresses your questions.
